Bob's Books is a stall on several markets in the Gers. He's a friendly guy who is happy to recommend titles. He'll take your books in part exchange so in reality you are paying a borrowing fee...I use it for airport type novels, thrillers etc and pay 22€ for 5 and trade back in the last five for 1€ each. An excellent service so look out for him. Auberge de Gauran is a pretty restaurant just outside Lectoure 32700 which usually has a local artist exhibiting and sometimes has live music. The owner is there to greet everyone as they arrive offering aperitifs on the terrace overlooking the wild but pretty gardens. This gets everyone mixing and you will usually find several nationalities represented. The set meals are served at long communal tables, generally confit etc. Go for the music, the possibility of meeting new people, the welcome and the rather hippy ambiance. Music at La Tannerie, 20 rue Carjac, 47000 Agen. 0553680404 A really great little concert hall with bar upstairs which generally has an art exhibition running. Friendly volunteer staff and a carefully selected programme throughout the year but YOU MUST BOOK as it is often full to bursting when they have blues nights for example. You can join for 15€ then get a reduced rate entry as well as getting weekly email notification of what's on. SADLY closed during July and August. If you like live music you will definitely find yourself a regular here.

Jazz club Le Mandala, 23 rue des Amidonniers 31000 Toulouse. Tucked away near the corner of a side street off Amidonniers (which is sign posted as you enter Toulouse from the Blagnac exit off the A62 motorway) this is a great little space with regular bands of all types on the jazz to blues continuum. It attracts a lot of students as it is right by the university area but an older crowd too. In summer they serve drinks and basic tapas on the terrace at the rear of the club while you listen to a free local jazz group. Getting to the terrace is a bit complicated but there is a map on the club's front door. Just bear in mind you are going to the back of the building and thus need to descend and walk along a path that goes under the road then go back up steps to get to the terrace!...actually I would not be happy to do this alone but the night I went there were plenty of students milling around so I had no worries. Good sounds, great ambiance, inexpensive and well worth a visit if you are in town.

Amphi du Matin is a great little concert hall tucked away in Moissac behind the main street leading to the cathedral, in allees de Brienne et Marengo. Well worth searching out but be advised this little place gets packed solid so go into the music shop which fronts it or ring up to book 0563049671. Sadly closed in August.
